Allard Pierson Museum
Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam hosts the exhibition Crossroads, Travelling through the Middle Ages. Unique objects from the ‘Dark Ages’ from all over Europe are on show. Crossroads sheds a new light on this period of migration, contact and exchange. The exhibition gives a fascinating picture of ‘the birth of Europe’. Exhibits include an Egyptian lady on a fragment of cloth from late antiquity, a fierce Germanic god portrayed on a gilded buckle and the cover of a sarcophagus from Syria. This would have been the tomb of a saint. Oil was poured into the sarcophagus, consecrated the bones and was then collected.
The exhibition Crossroads is divided into eight themes and shows artefacts of the Allard Pierson Museum and other Dutch Museums, the LVR-Landes Museum in Bonn, the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens, the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum in Budapest, the Museo de Jaén (Spain), the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels and the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden.
