Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam hosts the exhibition Crossroads, Travelling through the Middle Ages. Unique objects from the ‘Dark Ages’ from all over Europe are on show. Crossroads sheds a new light on this period of migration, contact and exchange. The exhibition gives a fascinating picture of ‘the birth of Europe’. Exhibits include an Egyptian lady on a fragment of cloth from late antiquity, a fierce Germanic god portrayed on a gilded buckle and the cover of a sarcophagus from Syria. This would have been the tomb of a saint. Oil was poured into the sarcophagus, consecrated the bones and was then collected.
