National Tulip Day in Amsterdam heralds the start of the tulip season in the Netherlands. Every year on the third Saturday of January, Dam Square in Amsterdam transforms itself into one very big garden with tens of thousands of tulips. And now the surprise: You can pick your own bunch of tulips for free!

However, if you want to do so, arrive early as this festival is very popular. At 8 a.m. gardeners start preparations for this urban garden. Lorry-loads of tulips are unloaded and carefully arranged. The tulip garden is open to visitors from 1 p.m – 4.30 p.m. or as soon as the last tulip has been picked.
