Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a city of canals, historic canal houses, cosy cafés and trendy markets. Explore the canal belt by bicycle or view the city from the water on a canal cruise. Visit the Jordaan district, which is a maze of small streets lined with unique boutiques. For a cultural experience, see Rembrandt’s masterpiece, ‘The Night Watch’, in the Rijksmuseum. Alternatively, visit the Van Gogh or Stedelijk museums to see more modern art. No visit to Amsterdam would be complete without walking through the Red Light District, where you can visit the Red Light Secrets: Museum of Prostitution. The MagaPass Amsterdam is very useful if you want to experience the city at a relaxed pace!
Five highlights of Amsterdam
1. Dam Square and the Royal Palace
Dam Square is to Amsterdam what Times Square is to New York. It is the city’s premier meeting place. The Royal Palace, located on the square, is immediately striking in its size and majesty. The main entrance is deliberately difficult to find so that the building could not be stormed by a dissatisfied crowd. Kalverstraat, the city’s main shopping street, starts right on the square. On the other side is Damrak, home to the Sex Museum and the Beurs van Berlage, which has a cosy café called Bistro Berlage.
Tip: On Dam Square stands the Nieuwe Kerk, which is not a place of worship, but rather an exhibition space with changing exhibitions. Some details remind us that the building was once a church, such as the organ decorated with dancing cherubs and the marble tomb of Michiel de Ruyter, an admiral who defeated the English.
2. Rijksmuseum
Discover masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals in the Rijksmuseum, and take a closer look at The Night Watch. It is impossible to see everything in the museum in one visit. Make a selection, as there is much more to see, including medieval objects, Delftware, Chinese lacquerware, photography and prints.
Tip: Surrounding the Rijksmuseum is the museum garden, a miniature open-air museum featuring a reconstructed city gate and tulips in spring.

3. Vondelpark
Take your bike and cycle through the park, or go for a walk. This beautiful green oasis is located in the heart of Amsterdam. You can play sports, walk the dog, take part in Friday Night Skating, have a beer on the Blauwe Theehuis terrace, study green parakeets, feed ducks, visit the film museum or attend an open-air performance.
4. Museum Willet-Holthuysen
This museum is a must-see if you want to find out how the wealthy Amsterdam bourgeoisie lived in the 19th century. Highlights include the dining room, which features Meissen tableware, and the gentlemen’s room, which has ceiling paintings. There is also an authentic kitchen with a pump handle for drawing water.
Tip: Go shopping in the Nine Streets, which are full of vintage and specialised shops!
5. Anne Frank House
A visit to the Anne Frank House is an essential part of any trip to Amsterdam. Everyone knows the story. Most people have a rough idea of what the Secret Annex must have looked like. Yet visiting the Secret Annex is more poignant and impressive than you might imagine. See the house where Anne Frank went into hiding and wrote her diary.
