Sleep in an Art Nouveau Listed Building
Hampshire Hotel Amsterdam American is only one block away from buzzing Leidseplein. This four-star hotel offers everything you crave for when away from home; from satellite TV to king-size beds with feathery soft pillows. Located right on the edge of the city centre, most sights are within easy walking distance, the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum are almost round the corner. Add to this Leidsestraat, one of Amsterdam’s famous shopping street, and you know why this is the hotel to be.
The Building
Built in 1902, the Hampshire Hotel Amsterdam American is a listed building with superb Art Nouveau touches both inside and out. Yet, the rooms are modern and the bay windows show former Art Nouveau glory. Breakfast is served in downstairs Café Americain which has maintained its original stylish interior, especially the Tiffany lamps are worth a look.
The Rooms
The guest rooms are equipped with satellite TV with various European channels, radio alarm clock, large wardrobes and more than enough space for suitcases and other items. The huge bay windows offer a splendid view of Singel Canal. The bathroom is just large enough and has plenty of space to put toiletries. Hotel Amsterdam American is a pleasant home from home.
Café Americain and Americain Bar
Café Americain, French spelling, refers to French cuisine served in Hotel American, very unusual in the early twentieth century, but now quite common. There are Art Nouveau details everywhere from the lamps to the murals. Stained glass windows depict scenes from Shakepeare’s plays. Every afternoon you can enjoy a real British afternoon tea here complete with scones, sandwiches and cakes. Be here for the Sunday Jazz Brunch with live music and mouthwatering food. Come back in the evening and follow in the footsteps of celebrities and stars who ordered here Sunset Amore or Lemon Jack; cocktails is what the Americain Bar is famous for.
