Christmas Markets in Amsterdam Winter Magic in the City

Each December, Amsterdam transforms into a charming winter wonderland with two Christmas markets, each with its own unique atmosphere. Ice-skating enthusiasts head to Museumplein, while those looking for both indoor and outdoor fun visit the RAI. Amsterdam’s Christmas markets have their own distinctive style and differ quite a bit from the famous German markets. Of course, there’s plenty of glühwein, but not many bratwursts.

A Festive Winter Village Full of Lights and Fun

In December, Museumplein transforms into a charming winter village with an ice rink with twinkling lights, delightful aromas, and plenty of holiday spirit.

Young and old show off their skating skills or glide across the ice against the backdrop of the Rijksmuseum. Wooden chalets around the rink sell artisanal goods, winter treats, and warm drinks. Be sure to taste the glühwein, the hot chocolate and ‘poffertjes’ (mini pancakes).

More Than Just Ice Skating

Besides skating fun, Christmas Winter Village offers plenty of entertainment: live music, children’s activities, and also a personal visit from Santa Claus himself

Where: RAI Amsterdam, Europaplein 24
When: December 17, 2025 – January 3, 2026

A Winter Fairy tale of Snow, Ice, and Music

From mid-December to early January, the RAI is a true winter wonderland with snow, ice, and sorts of festivities.

There are lots of things to do both inside and outside. Slide down the artificial snow-covered slope or skate across the ice rink. Not in the mood for the cold? Indoors you will find food trucks, winter bars, and live performances by well-known artists, making your visit even more enjoyable.

The RAI turns into a magical space with light shows, music, and a genuine winter atmosphere in the evening.

For Kids and Food Lovers

Children play to their heart’s content in the snow playground or join creative workshops. And of course, there’s no shortage of treats: poffertjes (mini pancakes), oliebollen (Dutch doughnuts), and hot chocolate topped with whipped cream.

Hot Tip

Plan a visit to the Christmas markets in Prague. In the city centre, you’ll find four large markets, and outside the centre there are smaller neighbourhood markets with fewer stalls but just as many festive decorations and delicious Christmas treats.
